In 2008, Powers & Company, Inc. successfully listed the Amalgamated Center on the National Register of Historic Places. The Amalgamated Center is located at 2113-2127 South Street in downtown Philadelphia. The building will be renovated using the Federal Historic Preservation Tax Program for apartment and retail use.
For fifty years, the building served as the headquarters for the powerful mens' garment workers union known as Philadelphia Joint Board of the American Clothing Workers of America (ACWA). The building also provided space for business, meeting, educational, recreational and cultural uses for tens of thousands of Philadelphia’s union workers.
The building was constructed in phases beginning in 1900 as a clubhouse for John Wanamaker's Bethany Brotherhood and added to in 1912. In 1934, the Philadelphia Joint Board for ACWA purchased the building. The building received a large addition and the existing facade was completely redesigned in 1937 in the Moderne style by the notable Philadelphia firm of Magaziner & Eberhard. The predominantly 3-story building is built of red brick laid in American bond with a gray granite base and concrete elements. It has a rectangular footprint and a rectangular block form with a flat built-up roof. |
